How long does it take to earn a GPL?
The minimum requirement is 15 hours dual and 15 hours solo instruction.
One also has to pass the medical examination and written exam on several subjects i.e airlaw.
Instruction cost is dependent on whether you have your own gyro or need to use the school's. Cost can be anything between R900 to R1200 per hour.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority accepted a regulation that all recreational flying will be done under the supervision of an approved ARO (Aircraft Recreational Organisation).
The SAGPA ARO was approved in December and all our members can now fly legally.
It was implemented in 2011 that no ATF (Authority to Fly) was issued without confirmation to RAASA that the owner belong to an ARO and in 2012 it will be implemented that no GPL (Gyro Pilot Licences) will be issued or renewed to non-members.
The different ARO's form the management of the Aeroclub of South Africa and it is this body that negotiate with the authorities to protect your privileges and rights.
As a member of SAGPA you also qualify on a huge discount on compulsory 3rd part insurance with Dennis Jankelow.

I cannot determine if you have to do a Private Pilots lisence for Gyrocopters. Is the lisencing for Gyrocopters different?
No, a PPL is not a prerequisite for a GPL although some of the theoretical exams cover the same topics.
Hi there. Im interested in flying gyroplanes. I would like to know what the medical consists of for a license as I have a vision problem in my one eye. I do have a normal code 08 drivers license. Also couls you tell me what subjects I need to pass to get my GPL. Are there any instructors in the Eastern Cape? Maybe the aero school in Port Alfred?
